Module 06 · Prescriptions with safety checks

A warning at the point of prescribing is worth more than an incident report afterwards.

When a clinician writes a prescription, DawaSmart checks it against the patient's recorded allergies, including class cross-reactivity such as penicillins, and against the patient's current medications, and shows any warning before the prescription is sent to the pharmacy.

What it does

Capabilities, as they exist in the product today.

Prescribing

  • Prescriptions written from the consultation or the ward, item by item with dose, route, frequency and duration
  • Prescriptions routed to the pharmacy queue with payment status visible
  • Prescription history on the patient record

Safety checks

  • Allergy warnings, including drug classes and known cross-reactivity
  • Checks against the patient's current medications from open prescriptions and admissions
  • Warnings are shown to the prescriber and recorded with the prescription

Administration

  • Inpatient medication administration record with scheduled and PRN doses
  • Dispensing and administration both act on the authorised prescription, never on free text

Workflow

How the work moves.

Who uses it: doctors and clinical officers, pharmacists, ward nurses.

  1. 1

    Write

The clinician adds items to the prescription from the product catalogue.

  2. 2

    Check

Allergy and current-medication warnings appear before the prescription is finalised.

  3. 3

    Dispense or administer

Pharmacy dispenses outpatients; the ward administers inpatients from the MAR.

Questions

About prescribing and medication safety

Is this a full drug-interaction database?
The checks cover recorded allergies with class cross-reactivity and the patient's current medications. They support the clinician's judgement and do not replace it.
